Photogrammetry
1 Session
A
In this workshop, Ryan will introduce participants to the use of Photogrammetry as an investigative and design tool in contemporary political and social practice. After which, he will run an in-depth day session training participants in the use of the photogrammetry software AgiSoft (available on Mac and PC). At the end of the session, participants will have delivered their own 3D scanned object in point cloud and textured mesh form, ready for use in time based 3D environments, such as UNREAL and Cinema 4D.

Ryan Cook is an architectural practitioner and co-founder of CHANNEL. He has previously worked as an Architectural Designer at David Chipperfield Architects and run technical workshops at the Architectural Association, London.

2D Animation
1 Session
A
In this workshop Martyna will introduce participants to the basics of 2D Animation in Adobe After Effects (available on Mac and PC), specifically in order to bring to life data visualisations and research diagrams. By the end of the session participants will understand the basics of After Effects and have delivered their own animated diagrams.

Martyna Marciniak is a designer and a researcher. Most recently she has worked for Forensic Architecture, where she was instrumental in cases of police and environmental violence.She has exhibited her work in Hong Kong, Germany and the UK.

Game Engines
2 Sessions
A
In this workshop series Alican will introduce participants to the application of game engines in social and political design practice. After which, he will guide participants through the basics of UNREAL Engine (available on Mac and PC) step-by-step. At the end of the series, participants will have implemented assets created in the previous photogrammetry and 3D animation workshops along with other existing online resources in a 3D environment. In addition, participants will have a nuanced understanding of the UNREAL physics system and real time rendering capabilities.

Alican Akturk is a freelance game developer, working on projects with Forensic Architecture and museums and galleries globally. He graduated from Goldsmiths University of London’s MA programme in Computer Games, Art & Design. In his spare time Alican creates experimental games as social and political commentaries.

3D Modelling & Animation
2 Sessions
A
In this workshop series, Martyna will introduce participants to the use of 3D animation softwares for research purposes. Through a series of mini-investigative exercises participants will grapple with the 3D research workflows and methodologies pioneered by Forensic Architecture and other design research practices. By the end of the series participants will understand the basics of Cinema 4D (available on Mac and PC) and be able to apply 3D dimensional investigative methodologies to their own research practice.

Investigative Coding
2 Sessions
A
Stuart will introduce participants to the basics of coding for use as a research or design tool. After a in-depth breakdown of the basics of Javascript and Visual Studio Code, participants will unpick existing datasets using creative tools for data analysis and visualisation. By the end of the two sessions, participants will have parsed an existing data set and understand how to interrogate quantitative data through code and output network graphs, 3D scatter plot graphs, geolocation maps and chronolocation timelines.

Stuart Batchelor is an artist and creative technologist. He currently is the lead Creative Technology Director at CASSETTE and previously worked as a Developer at Framestore. He has exhibited works at the Tate, V&A, the National Gallery and the Royal College of Art.

Video Analysis
1 Session
A
In this short workshop session our very own Co-founder Kishan will introduce participants to the basics of video editing in Adobe Premiere Pro (available on Mac and PC). Participants will learn to edit together the video output produced in previous sessions, weaving together the narratives of their group and individual projects.

Kishan San is a Co-founder of School SOS and a researcher at Forensic Architecture. With FA he has  published investigations into the Beirut Port Explosion, and killings at the Greek Turkish border which were presented at the LIBE Commitee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs in European Parliment.

SOS_21 Course

This series aims to arm SOS_21 participants with the knowledge of cutting edge tools and softwares, not only to represent their ideas but also for the purposes of research and investigation. Each session will be day long, with a guided step-by-step introduction to the software in the morning and the opportunity for one-to-one tutorials with our coordinators in the afternoon.
